While a clinical diagnosis can offer valuable insight into specific behaviors or developmental challenges, every child and family possesses a completely unique profile. A diagnosis is simply one data point within a broader constellation of essential information. Edi has extensive experience supporting children with a wide range of needs, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Failure to Thrive, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Selective Mutism, and Sensory Processing Differences.

When a young child is diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), we must first ask: Does this child feel safe within their body and environment? Whenever these terms are applied, we should thoughtfully explore three critical areas:

1. Agency and Autonomy: How effectively is the child able to materialize their own ideas and intentions?
2. Somatic Experience: What is the felt experience within their body? Are they experiencing a sense of mastery and success, or are they primarily operating from a place of hypervigilance and protective reactivity?
3. Comprehension and Capacity: How do they understand what is being demanded of them? Is the expectation truly within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)?

Using these questions as the starting point for clinical reasoning, a plan is created to know how best to support this child and foster robust and frictionless alignment.

How is DIR®/Floortime™ different from other approaches, like ABA?

DIR® stands for Developmental, Individual Differences, and Relationship-based. Floortime™ is a technique or strategy that can be used to nurture connections, support and scaffold for the child while following the child's lead. This model is uniquely neurodiversity-affirming because we prioritize what is deeply salient and meaningful to the individual. By following the child's natural interests and intrinsic motivation, we ensure they feel safe, seen, and empowered to lead their own development.

ABA is rooted in behavioral psychology and is adult-led. As opposed to starting where a child is developmentally, the focus is often looking at what peers are doing at the same age and working on those complex skills. As opposed to intrinsic motivation, ABA uses extrinsic motivation and reward systems. The focus is heavily data-driven, tracking how frequently a behavior occurs and adjusting the environment to promote compliance.

Edi observes the child in their school environment to identify successes as well as what might be challenging. She has visited over 100 schools and coordinated alignment and workable strategies with parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists and administrators working towards fostering a more robust educational experience.
